Promotional Techniques

Question 3 will always ask you about promotional techniques and you must make sure that you are fully prepared to answer this question. You must understand why each promotional technique is effective as well as have some individual examples to help your analysis.

DVD covers are an excellent way of promoting a film. Using enigma codes, colour schemes, star power, star ratings, special features, images, special editions and many more features a DVD cover needs to persuade a browser in a shop or on an internet outlet to buy the film.

In many ways, DVD covers and promotional posters are very similar in the way that they attract an audience to buy or watch the film. The promotional poster is a lot more focused on trying to encourage an audience to watch a film at the cinema. Again using enigma codes and sometimes displaying extreme disequilibrium the promotional poster uses colour schemes, images, star power, imax/3D attraction, star rating and reviews, mode of address and many other features to promote it's film.

A relatively new form of film promotion but many consider social networking to be the most important method of selling a film. Using the two step flow, social networking sites allow audiences to engage with a number of promotional techniques such as engaging images, colour schemes, star power and multi-media such as trailers and soundtracks and then be able to share this with friends at the touch of a button. Essentially it's free promotion for the distribution company.

When we talk about merchandising we are talking about anything that could be used to promote the film such as figurines, mugs, teaser posters, CD soundtracks, mouse mats, t-shirts, etc. Merchandising allows fans to appear experts on a film as well as visually presenting their like for the film. Features such as engaging images, colour schemes, special edition material and the ability to be part of an elite group of fans all mean merchandising is an effective promo tool.

Official film websites have become an excellent promo tool in the film industry. The way that the website can host videos, link to social networking sites and display key images and special content from the film allows a fan to engage with limited material on a promo website. Along with these features, websites display engaging images, star power and often link with different platforms to form a rounded promotional campaign.

Official film trailers have become increasingly important in recent years with films releasing numerous trailers to promote a film. The trailer is particularly good at creating enigma in the audience as they question what is going to happen in the real film. As well as the enigma created, trailers use star power, limited content, reviews and many other features to ensure a film is advertised effectively.
